RESPIRATORY SURVEIILANCE

To help your company meet OSHA Respiratory Surveillance Protection Program regulations, not only does testing have to be conducted on the air quality of the work facility, but employees themselves are required to participate in screenings and tests. OSHA regulation 29 CFR-1910.134 requires a minimum of "medical clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit testing." Once the medical questionnaire is reviewed by a physician, further tests could be recommended, before an employee is cleared to wear a respirator. But trying to match up each employee's schedule with a convenient testing location, all by a certain target date can be a logistical headache.

We eliminate that problem by bringing the testing facility on-site to you. Our fully equipped mobile service units and trained professionals can conduct several necessary and complex respiratory on-site procedures. Our complete list of respiratory surveillance services includes:

Pulmonary Function Testing
Testing is conducted by only experienced and qualified Pulmonary Function Technicians who have adequate familiarization of onsite pulmonary function testing.
Equipment used is the Cosmed Kit Micro Spirometry System which operates through customized software interfaced with a handset. With this system, each applicant is provided a tube which is disposable and used new for every employee. This virtually eliminates any possibility of cross-contamination and provides for a more hygienic clinical test. The cleanliness of this procedure also results in higher employee acceptance.
Testing procedures meet or exceed the standards established by the American Thoracic Society (ATS), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Medical evaluation and interpretation of test results are conducted by in-house Pulmonologist/Occupational Health Specialist.
With four spirometry systems in service, we can test up to four employees every 10 minutes on-site.
In addition to the clinical results, we provide documentation of technical credentials, a copy of daily verification of spirometer calibrations and a copy of the annual syringe factory calibrations report.
The employees who were found with altered Pulmonary Function Test results are counseled by the respective physicians with specific focus on preventive measures.

Respiratory Physical Examination
The respiratory physical examination includes the following:

  1. Evaluation of complete medical history
  2. Verification of height and weight
  3. Blood pressure (systolic & Diastolic) at rest
  4. Resting heart rate
  5. Regularity of heart beat
  6. Pulmonary function test
  7. Vision (Snellen) screening *
  8. Color discrimination screening *
  9. Whisper (hearing) Test*

*Vision, color discrimination and whisper screenings are conducted solely for safety purposes as it is assumed that the need for a respirator places the employee in a more hazardous work environment.
There is an erroneous assumption that pulmonary function testing alone is sufficient for a medical clearance for respiratory use. This assumption leads employees to work at high physical risk jobs, i.e. high exertion levels, rescue operations, high heat levels or even in confined spaces, where the cardiovascular system operating improperly can place the employee at significant risk. This is why verification of the employee's blood pressure, heart rate and regularity of heart beat, together with physician review of medical history is critical to the respiratory evaluation.

Chest X-Ray Examination
Our organization specializes in conducting on-site radiological examination by using our mobile units or by utilizing the space given to us by the industries. We use a state of art mobile, calibrated 30MA/60 MA Portable Xray machine as and when required. The films are taken by qualified Radiographers with emphasis on quality films and minimum radiation. The films are processed and developed on site and reported for any sub clinical/clinical pathology by our in-house Radiologist
